How Can I Improve Sluggish Menswear Business?

by Steve Pruitt

AsktheExpertsQ: My menswear business has slowed, but my women’s wear department is doing well. What can I do to improve my men’s business for fall?

A: We are seeing sluggishness in menswear due to a lack of new fashion, especially in tops, such as shirts, sweaters and knits. I suggest you take a close look at your vendor structure in these categories and replace the vendors that are not doing well. When you go to market, look for vendors that are offering something new in terms of style and test them out in your store.

The good news is this isn’t an economic problem — it’s a fashion problem — so by making smart choices you can buy your way out of the slump.

  1. I’ll tell you what our specialty store needs- An store finance program Similar to what the furniture stores use. We need to partner and contact Wells Fargo. Put me in a panel and I can help put this together.
