KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE | EDWARD ARMAH ON NBC’S TODAY SHOW
Not many men’s accessories designers make it to national television, but Edward Armah just hit the jackpot. Better still, his 15-year-old son Manasseh (who’s been published in MR magazine) got to be part of the program, kicking off the interview before Al Roker took over.
“The interview, timed in conjunction with Black History Month, was about my journey into menswear,” Edward explains. “From my migration from Ghana to the United States to navigating the challenges of the industry, including financial hurdles, sourcing, and growth. Other topics of discussion included why I chose accessories, people who have worn my products, and how to launch a business without money…
“We discussed what kept me going even in difficult times, as well as my advice to young entrepreneurs looking to enter the industry. It ties back to your first interview with me for MR magazine, A Labor of Love, highlighting how, in 2010, I gave up everything amid a global market crash to start a small tie, bowtie and pocket square business. I also spoke about the people who made my journey possible and the many obstacles along the way.”
According to Edward, Al Roker has been a long-time client, buying Edward’s designs when traveling the country and wearing them on the Today show. “But it wasn’t until Brian Hawkins from Richards, Al’s current stylist in Greenwich Ct, shared my backstory that I received a call from a Today show producer wanting to feature my journey. I happened to be in Ghana at the time but once we finally connected, she listened intently and was blown away. The story became even more compelling when she learned that my creations have been worn by presidents, artists, and tastemakers around the world.”
When asked how he made it as an unknown Black designer in a highly competitive market, Edward spoke about timing and strategy. “Success comes from identifying a product that not only excites retailers but also helps them make money. I focused on categories that had been overlooked for decades, breathing new life into neckwear and pocket squares via an African palette and Neapolitan inspiration. I then evolved into the next opportunity: luxury polos and cool socks. I try to avoid seasonal categories and markdowns.”
Edward is most pleased that this interview, airing on Wednesday morning on the third hour of the Today show, truly captures the essence of the American dream. “Looking back 15 years later, it’s emotional and inspiring to see that the dream is still alive.”
We are so proud of Edward. He deserves all and any accolades. He is also a nice guy
