When John Elliott was a kid growing up in San Francisco, he’d sketch sneakers and send them to Nike. The Swoosh, kindly, would send encouraging letters back—nonetheless rejecting Elliott’s designs. Elliott, of course, would go on to become one of the country’s most exciting young designers, almost singlehandedly inventing the monochromatic, draped-and-layered look still dominant in certain #minimalist #menswear corners of Instagram. But Nike was always a constant, so when he got a chance to start collaborating with the Beaverton behemoth—on his own Nike Vandal, and on a LeBron James signature sneaker—things came full circle.
