Macy’s LA Plans Remind — Not All Pop-Up Retail Is Created Equal

Macy’s latest announcement that it plans to debut its The Market@Macy’s concept in October at the recently refurbished Westfield Century City Mall in Los Angeles, CA calls to mind one important fact — not all “pop-retail” is created equal. “Pop-up” retail is one of the most overused terms within the retail industry right now. Take a look at the nearest flea markets, farmers’ markets, mall kiosks, even garage sales, and they are all pop-up retail in the truest definition of the phrase. Yet, these installations rarely secure the national attention that the Macy’s announcement will this week. Pop-up retail, unless there is an innovative twist involved, is really nothing new. As it is currently constituted more often than not, pop-up retail is just a variation on an age old theme, or, as I like to call it, it is just old school retail on shorter-term leases.
