MAISON MARGIELA, REEBOK DEBUT NEW TABI INSTAPUMP FURY

by Stephen Garner

Expanding their ongoing collaboration, Maison Margiela and Reebok have unveiled the second evolution of the Tabi Instapump Fury.

The shoe, which first launched in early 2020, builds on the fusion between the sportswear studio’s classic Instapump Fury sneaker and the French Haute Couture house’s split-toed Tabi style. Spring/summer 2021, introduces the Tabi Instapump Fury Oxford, a glazed calf leather low-top derby featuring Reebok’s trademark Pump Technology and a chunky sole, available in black, white, and yellow colorways.

Hybridizing the most familiar shoe codes of the two collaborators, the Instapump Fury – Reebok’s trailblazing sneaker from 1994 – unites with Maison Margiela’s signature Tabi from 1988. The Tabi’s split-toed calfskin upper creates the foundation for the new derby, morphed with Reebok’s The Pump Technology, an inflation technology developed in 1989 to offer athletes a customized, locked-in fit. The transformative function echoes elements key to the philosophies of Maison Margiela.

The derby is placed on a sole design native to the Retro Fit, the sneaker launched by Maison Margiela in 2018, while the heeled boot interprets the Instapump Fury. Like the original Reebok sneaker, the outer sole and midsole are constructed from rubber and expansive foam across different color variations. For optimized flexibility and stability, a sheet of Hexalite is integrated in the sole.

Maison Margiela x Reebok Tabi Instapump Fury Oxford will be available for $995 in select Maison Margiela stores and on maisonmargiela.com and reebok.com on April 30th.
