OFF-WHITE REFLECTS ON THE STATE OF THE WORLD FOR NEW COLLECTION

by Stephen Garner

Off-White is reflecting on the state of the world with its spring/summer 2021 men’s pre-collection, called “What Stars Are You Under?”

The Virgil Abloh-designed collection comments on resetting, repairing, and revolutionizing the world. Given the current climate, with Coronavirus and social justice causes changing the way we are living our day-to-day lives, Off-White sought the opportunity to develop a collection that reflects on the moment.

As a result, Off-White presents everything from gloves that, when held up, read “I Support Young Black Businesses,” to a white hoodie that sports a graphic of a construction truck pushing the Earth along.

Cleanly tailored and sharp-shouldered overcoats are a focus, which bear an almost military-grade decorum. Denim is topstitched with contrasting thread; other pant shapes are either narrow or slouchy, broken at the calf to provide movement and comfort. Business aesthetics—flannels, tonal grays, suiting, and blazers—are bonded to an undercurrent of youth, and youthful nonconformity.

These playful, slightly antiestablishment cues are seen in caricatured devil and gremlin motifs, all-over graffiti prints, beaded half-belts, and bomber jackets. The bomber will be available in one particularly introspective concept; the fabric is screen printed with a twilit suburban scene, lights glowing through home windows, nodding to both the comfort of place and the extraordinary nature of the self-isolation humankind has lived through in 2020.

Accessories see a broad range, including pointy-toe boots, day-glo sneakers, petite carriers, tote bags, neckties with cutouts, and the aforementioned gloves.
