Designer Sal Cesarani is going to appear in a PBS documentary about learning and the brain. The documentary, called “Smarter Brains,” will premiere this weekend and re-air several times in various markets across the country.

Cesarani tells us he found out about the project through the cinematographer he worked with on his “No More Cancer” video short a couple years ago.

“He told me, ‘You know, Sal, they’re doing something on smarter brains and I think you would be perfect for it. You run a small business, you’re doing fashion and teaching students—you should get involved with these people,'” Cesarani explained.

The 90-minute documentary, narrated by actor Peter Coyote, features an array of scientists and researchers discussing how we learn, how we can increase brain power, how certain brain diseases work and how we can fend them off.

Cesarani’s part (excerpted below) is about how important it is for people of all ages to stay active and to continue learning. In addition to his fashion business, Cesarani is both a professor and a student at Parsons The New School for Design in New York.

“This is so important,” Cesarani says. “You can learn at any age and be as savvy and hip as the next guy—and that’s me. You’ve got to go to the gym three times a week, you’ve got to read the Times and get on the computer and see what’s going on in the world. Look at fashion, see what you should be wearing. We’re in a world where the body and mind have got to be kept well—don’t let yourself go.”

In the New York market, the show will air first tomorrow at 10:30am on channel 13 and then again at 3pm on channel 21.
