Off-price stores have long been a bright spot retail, yet amid headwinds for the group, Burlington Stores looks strongest, says Barclays. Where we were: Even during retail’s darkest days, discounters held up better than peers, as they were seen as less vulnerable to online competition. Where we’re headed: That strength has continued during the retail revival, although Burlington has more levers to pull to offset higher freight and labor costs, says Barclays. Although retail has reached new highs this year, for much of 2017 the sector was left for dead, as investors worried that e-commerce would decimate brick-and-mortar players — except off-price retailers.
