Three quick questions: Jeff Block, Block Industries

by Harry Sheff

We caught up with Jeff Block at his new multi-line showroom, Block Industries. Located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, Block’s roster includes: Cockpit, Brooklyn Motors, BTNS, Tumi, Anthony Morato and 1921 Jeans. Here, we chat with him about New York market, branching out on his own and what every man needs in his closet.

What were the best booked items/categories from NY market? What are retailers selling now?
Best booked were Cockpit fashion leathers and lightweight finishing pieces like BTNS fashion overshirts and Cockpit lightweight baseball jackets. What’s selling now? T-shirts are a category killer. People sleep on T-shirts because it’s not sexy or fun to talk about, but that’s what guys buy for spring/summer. Short-sleeve wovens are also selling; they feel new and work well in the warmer weather.

What does it take for a sales showroom to survive?
Customer service is the most important part. Just look at companies like Apple and Starbucks; they’re successful because their service is what sticks out to customers and what they remember when they leave. There are tons of brands in the market, so the smartest thing you can do is make things easy for people and give them good service. You’ve also got to keep the showroom light and fun—no one likes to work in a stuffy atmosphere—and an HD Apple TV is a must!

What are the basic essentials every man should have in his closet?
At least three white shirts, two amazing straight-leg jeans (preferably dark), a great statement watch and most importantly attitude…put that in your closet!”
