Gabriela Hearst Menswear—Definitely Not For Hypebeasts

Gabriela Hearst hired the actor Rhys Coiro to model her new menswear offering. “We wanted a man,” she said of the 40-year-old TV star, acknowledging men’s fashion’s predilection for boy-child mannequins concave of chest and scrawny of hips. Two seasons in, it’s more than clear that Hearst isn’t designing for hypebeasts. “I’m not about trends,” she declared, wearing a pantsuit from one of her earliest ready-to-wear collections—she launched the brand in 2015. The statement goes just as much for her menswear, which she designs in collaboration with her always nattily dressed artistic director Peter Miles. And, so, this Resort lineup is an elaboration of her Pre-Fall debut. She’s doing two men’s collections a year as opposed to the industry-standard women’s four, and she’s showing them on a pre-season calendar to maintain a work-life balance.
