INNER BEAUTY: CANALI’S SPRING SUMMER 2023 CAMPAIGN

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to speak at New York City’s High School for the Fashion Industries career day. To open, I referenced the “cerulean” scene from “The Devil Wears Prada:” The one where Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly sends up her new assistant’s “lumpy blue sweater” to demonstrate how trends trickle down from designer creations all the way to the closeout bin. As I set up the scene, I realized that the movie came out in 2006, before some of the students I’d be addressing were born.

Still, although our industry has certainly changed a lot since back then, that movie has some awesome quotes — and valuable lessons — to be remembered. One of my favorites has always been Stanley Tucci’s “Yes. Because that’s really what this whole multibillion-dollar industry is all about, isn’t it? Inner beauty.” Well, apparently for Spring/Summer 2023, it is! At least for the Italian luxury menswear brand Canali.

The collection has debuted its Spring/Summer campaign titled “Through His Eyes,” spotlighting personalities whose actions embody the values of respect, kindness, optimism,, and integrity while speaking to the causes, initiatives, and beliefs that drive them. The series of inspiring stories strives to improve the world through personal interpretations of beauty. Participants in the campaign include Stefano Boeri (architect & urban planner), Giampaolo Grossi (Starbucks Italy), Thomas Ermacora (city futurist), Flavio Paolo Graziano (musician), Kevin Claiborne (visual artist), Oddur Thorrison (photographer) and Stefano Canali himself.

The campaign images include mixed and matched separates as ideal pairings in materials like suede and linen, accented by terracotta, powder pink, and sage hues. Easy yet elegant outerwear is a highlight this season, best illustrated in a suede terracotta jacket that can be dressed up or down and made to last through time and trends.
