MNTGE COLLABORATES WITH SOPHIA AMORUSO ON HEAVY-METAL INSPIRED COLLECTION

by John Russel Jones

The popularity of vintage heavy metal music T-shirts—from classic bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Iron Maiden—have inspired blockchain technology brand Mntge to team up with serial entrepreneur and vintage collector Sophia Amoruso on a new collection. Mntge + Sophia Amoruso is a new lineup of 40 NFC-chipped vintage metal and metal-inspired T-shirts curated by the collector. The line also includes vintage sweaters, hoodies, jackets, shorts, and pants. Each piece is inspired by Amoruso’s love of the fiercely individualistic and rebellious spirit of heavy metal music and culture, the same individualism and unapologetic attitude that has been an essential part of Sophia’s brand since her earliest days of the hit cult brand Nasty Gal.

“Every vintage piece has a different story,” says Amoruso (above) about her love of vintage clothing. “It has been lived in by someone who has had many experiences, good and bad.” And for her, a big metal music fan, vintage metal T-shirts represent some of the best stories, as well as some of her earliest vintage finds. Like her personal favorite, an old Mötorhead tee. “It’s not the most rare, and definitely not the most expensive. But the tee itself is a classic. It’s a staple in any metal head’s archive.”

Additional pieces in the collection include denim jeans, shorts, and overalls, as well as vintage T-shirts from bands like Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica, AC/DC, and Mötorhead. The collection also features original artwork and designs by celebrated metal illustrators and graphic designers. Each piece in the collection features a Mntge tag that is NFC-chipped, which provides information about the garment’s history, construction, provenance, and more. The tag allows the garment to be digitally “signed and saved” permanently on a digital record, as well as physically on the garment itself.

The collection is available at Mntge.com. Retails start at around $300.

“I love vintage because it’s something that was made in an era when people were making music and doing things that I think are interesting. And I still wear a ton of vintage. I have pieces from high school, and pieces from when I started Nasty Gal on eBay. I like things that are hard to get, and great vintage is hard to get,” adds Amoruso.

“Sophia and I have been friends for a long time, and we’re excited to bring her into the Mntge world in this way. She has such great style and is a true fan of vintage. Having her as not only a collaborator, but an investor and advisor too, that’s really amazing and we’ve been hoping to work together for awhile so it’s exciting to see this come to life,” says Mntge cofounder Nick Adler.
