Revising The Retail Landscape
Lately I’ve found myself spending extra time reading up on current events, trying to make sense of them using context from the past. We are all looking to understand what the future world will look like. I came across this commentary from McKinsey entitled “The New Normal,” which, as it turns out, was written in 2009 on the heels of the financial crisis. Author Ian Davis wrote, “The business landscape has changed fundamentally; tomorrow’s environment will be different, but no less rich in possibilities for those who are prepared.” That has never been more true than today. My industry, retail, was experiencing turbulence well before the pandemic hit. A confluence of factors — globalization, fast fashion and new distribution channels, to name a few — have been rocking our world for years. The hard truth is we were too slow to change on our own.
