Starbucks’ New Dress Code Has No Love For Cool Hats

In response to a drop in employee morale, Starbucks decided to make some changes—most notably an increase in employee pay and, tellingly, the debut of a relaxed dress code that would allow “more room for self-expression.” And while Starbucks positions itself as the cool kid of corporate America, employees’ appearance is closely monitored and controlled, so this move to allow a little more flexibility is a big deal. Obviously the signature green apron is staying put but the company is now allowing baristas to expand on the color of their shirts, beyond just black and white to gray, navy, dark denim and brown—and even including patterns (albeit subtle ones).
