by John Russel Jones

Supima, the non-profit brand that promotes the use of American grown Pima cotton around the world, has announced this year’s Supima Design Competition (SDC) where students from top  design universities across the country showcase eveningwear capsule collections created with Supima cotton fabrics  during New York Fashion Week on September 10, 2022. The 15th Annual competition provides students both visibility and a chance to win a financial prize of $10,000 awarded to the winner. Joining this milestone year, the show will be co-hosted for the first time by award winning CFDA designer, Christian Siriano, and supermodel and entrepreneur, Coco Rocha, marking her second time as a host for the competition. Hosts will MC the live runway show and be joined by this year’s prestigious panel of judges including Ann Caruso, Avril Graham, Cipriana Quann, Claire Thomson–Jonville, Edward Barsamian, Fern Mallis, Freya Drohan, Godfrey Deeney, Jeffrey Taylor (2016 SDC winner), Jerome Lamaar, Kelly Augustine, Lisa Lockwood, Luke Meagher, Mickey Boardman, Shibon Kennedy, and Tyler McCall.

This highly talented group of young, emerging designers were tasked with creating their interpretation of looks from day to evening using Supima cotton, America’s luxury cotton. All eight finalists will have the opportunity to show their designs during the New York Fashion Week runway presentation at The Gallery at Spring Studios, the NYFW hub where many distinguished designers debut their seasonal collections year after year. The show will also be available to livestream on Supima’s Instagram page.

“It is truly exciting to be celebrating 15 years of the SDC. That is the time has passed so quickly is a testament to the partnership Supima has developed with the leading design schools and their top graduates. Each year these talented finalists capture so perfectly the moment we are living in their collections. I can’t wait to share the 2022 collections and look forward to future years to come,” says Buxton Midyette, VP of Marketing and Promotions for Supima.

Once again, CFDA Award winning eveningwear designer, Bibhu Mohapatra, has supported the SDC for his eighth year as a mentor to the finalists, providing insight, support, and advice to each contestant.
