Retail must be one of the most siloed and hierarchical industries known to man. Individual fiefdoms springing up in order to preserve vested interests and protect their key performance indicators (KPIs). ‘Twas ever thus. I always recall my time at Kingfisher running IT services at one of its operating companies. I was tasked with chairing the year 2000 (remember that?) executive committee, ostensibly because the business felt that the entire Y2K bug was an IT problem. But without debating the rights and wrongs of that, what struck me was that these people, from across the business, had hardly ever sat around the same table before.
