Why Tyler, The Creator’s Wacked-Out, Trippy Fashion Show Was A Game Changer
Tyler, the Creator staged his first runway show in Los Angeles on Saturday night. His brand, Golf Wang, isn’t exactly new, but the platform that put on his show, called Made L.A., is. IMG-owned Made is known for its emerging-designer showcase during New York Fashion Week, but this is the first time it’s done something like this on the West Coast. Given that Tyler grew up in California and made his name in the fashion game with a store on Fairfax Avenue with his collective, Odd Future, it felt like an appropriate casting. The other big news from the fashion show meets mini-concert was how Tyler took the industry’s buzzy see-now, buy-now concept and put it to good use. As soon as the show was over, almost every piece was put up for presale. Ditto for Tyler’s latest track that’s now streaming. At a time when most fashion brands (albeit bigger ones) are dragging their feet to meet the demand a digitally savvy global audience creates, this was proof that it can be done—and without some trumped-up announcements about it. Here’s a look at what went down at the event, which included a runway show and various performances from Tyler. See more at GQ.
