UNTUCKIT LAUNCHES SEVEN-PIECE DESIGNER CAPSULE COLLECTION WITH MENSWEAR DESIGNER DAVID HART FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2023
Back in 2009, during my first round with MR Magazine, the team was excited when web editor Harry Sheff discovered the up-and-coming designer David Hart. Hart was one of a new generation of fashion creatives who were rediscovering classic styling as part of what became the #menswear moment in those early days of social media. Hart had launched his independent neckwear line with a collection of luxury ties, bow ties, and pocket scarves that brought a fresh perspective to the category. We felt like proud parents — or maybe proud older siblings — when, a few years later, he debuted his first ready-to-wear collection. The Annapolis, Maryland, native and F.I.T. graduate (go Tigers!) has also held roles as the artistic director of American heritage brands Hickey Freeman and Hart Schaffner Marx. Everything comes around again, and now we’re excited to announce that menswear brand Untuckit has just released a designer capsule collection with Hart.
“Untuckit has been a staple in menswear for more than 11 years, and we thought it would be exciting to see David’s interpretation of the brand through his fashion-forward lens,” says Untuckit Founder Chris Riccobono. “We’re thrilled with David’s use of prints, tailoring, and fabric knowledge to bring his fresh take on Untuckit to life. This capsule feels fresh, yet still relatable to our customers, and we can’t wait to debut this newest collaboration.”
Consisting of two linen shirts (one traditional short sleeve and one camp collar), one lightweight novelty sweater, two cable knit polos, and two pairs of drawstring shorts, the assortment reflects Hart’s signature design esthetic while building on Untuckit’s brand ethos and continued exploration of partnerships with artists and designers with strong points of view. Available exclusively on Untuckit.com, the Untuckit x David Hart capsule retails for $88.00–$148.00 USD.
“I was inspired by a recent trip I took to Montauk, the coastal end of New York’s Long Island,” says Hart. “I grew up in Annapolis, Md., but have family on Long Island. The water and coastal energy has always influenced my design process and the iconography of life on the water has always been a key element in my life. I was interested in nautical themes for this collection including sharks, lobsters, and rustic hand feels for textiles. I created prints in hand-painted watercolors for a weather-worn look. The sharks are my favorite, and they were fun to paint. I rounded out the collection with washed cotton broadcloth and 2/30s merino. These will be summer staples that can easily be implemented into an existing wardrobe.”
Dedicated to supporting New York City’s disappearing Garment District and other small family-run textile mills, Hart produces all of the clothing and fabrics in his own collection in the United States, Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. During his career, David has been a finalist for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, named one of the Best New Menswear Designers in America by GQ Magazine, nominated for The International Woolmark Prize in Menswear for the USA region, and was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2015.
David is our generation’s most underrated menswear designers. It’s a crime that none of the larger brands didn’t scoop him up and let him take over creative direction.
