WOMEN IN MENSWEAR: MARYBETH WALSH

MaryBeth Walsh of Emanuel Berg is an outstanding woman in the menswear industry.
by Karen Alberg Grossman

If only Women’s History Month could become Women’s History Year so we could honor the philosophies and contributions of all the wise, witty, outspoken Women in Menswear these days. Here MaryBeth Walsh, Senior Account Executive – Custom Shirt Specialist, from Emanuel Berg, calls it like she sees it.

“Overall, I feel being a woman has helped me in my career because mentors along the way observed my passion and work ethic and helped share it with others. I’ve had two quintessential mentors in this industry. First, the wonderful, lovely, Mrs. Audrey Talbott. She was my ultimate cheerleader and pushed me everyday to work hard, live hard and truly appreciate all the special people in my life. A piece of my heart broke the day she passed. My other key mentor is Howard Zenner, former EVP of Hickey Freeman. He taught me how to be direct, to always double check correspondence, and how to follow up properly.

“The best advice I ever received from a mentor is this: In retail, when dealing with a client, never quote the total price. Rather say, ‘How would you like to pay today?’ Also, when managing a team, never ask an employee, ‘Could you fold those sweaters?’ Say instead, ‘Please fold those sweaters.’

“What advice would I give to women entering the menswear industry today? Buy an iron. Dress the part.  Don’t do hipster. Wear lipstick. Act confident. Always order the expensive glass of wine.

“As for my preference of bosses, I’d rather work for men. Women are crazy. Men are less sensitive. But as for hiring, I’d rather hire women, as long as they can handle constructive criticism and not take things too seriously.

“Establishing a healthy work/life balance is tougher than it seems. Although I’m very happy with how the Emanuel Berg luxury shirt business has grown, it’s been a challenge juggling the growth. I pride myself on having strong communication skills with my accounts, keeping things very buttoned up and organized. With the growth of business, however, the timeliness of things occasionally falls a little short. To maintain a healthy mind, it’s important to create boundaries with colleagues and customers. I struggle with getting consumed with work on a planned vacation or day off. Turning off the phone is something we all need to do from time to time.

“Bottom line, I’m extremely proud of the relationships I’ve nurtured in our industry. I have great friends and loyal customers. We share the same passions and are working towards the same goals. I am most proud of my work ethic: I work hard, very hard. Everyone knows I’m always working to help improve things, to make lives easier and I think I’m appreciated for this.

“As for goals, I hope to someday write a book about the trials and tribulations of a woman in the luxury menswear business.

“What would I do differently if I could start my career over? I’d ask for what I’m worth.”
