’90s Throwback

by Harry Sheff

At a press conference last week in Las Vegas, Reebok’s Todd Krinsky, global VP of Classics, entertainment and basketball proclaimed “[The latest Reebok Classics collection] is all about the 90s!” And while vintage and retro themes are nothing new in menswear, ’90s-inspired style was a standout trend for spring 2013. Here are just a few brands that are bringing the ’90s back in all the right ways. (Cue the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song now…)

Reebok promoted its 2013 Classics collection with a panel discussion moderated by the division’s creative director, hip hop artist and record producer, Swizz Beatz. The panel included former basketball players Allen Iverson and Dominique Wilkins along with hip hop artists Rick Ross and Tyga. The Classics line (which launched a year and a half ago) is a collection of Reebok re-releases like The Pump Twilight Zone (originally released in 1990) and Emmitt Smith’s ES22 from 1997.

Montreal-based Vintage Frames Company travels the globe seeking original, unworn glasses from the 1950s to the 1980s. Many styles are one-of-a-kind pieces from brands like Cazal, Dior, Persol, Ray-Ban, Dunhill and Gucci. In addition to frames, they sell jewelry, much of which are from designer runway shows from the ’80s and ’90s. I love these vintage Chanel gold chains.

Mookee by Yuske and Dr. Romanelli (DRX) are brands known for deconstructing and reconstructing apparel. For spring 2013 the two collaborated on this collection of limited edition jackets and vests made from vintage MCM bags, leather and denim.
