CARLTONS CLOSING OF REHOBOTH BEACH STORE

by John Russel Jones

After 63 years the legendary Carltons Men’s & Women’s Apparel will permanently close its store on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, Del., sometime in early December.

“We want to thank all of our wonderful customers and awesome employees from all over the world, who made Carltons an iconic fixture in the Rehoboth Beach community.  We are also grateful to our landlord, sales reps, vendors, and service partners who have made it easy to provide amazing apparel and service consistently through those 63 years,” say owners Trey and Marcia Kraus.

Carltons has experienced hurricanes, nor ‘easters, recessions, streetscaping, fires, fashion-trend changes, internet shopping, pandemics, and 13 Presidents, but there is not one specific cause for the closing.

The Krauses explained, “We have been the caretakers to the Carltons’ legacy for the last 19 years here in Rehoboth Beach and have made every effort to keep the Rehoboth Avenue business open, but the hurdles to stay after renovation would be too many and too high.  We will continue to search for a new home for Carltons, but we must proceed forward with closing the Rehoboth Avenue store.  The timing is so unfortunate, as this year has been the best in our history.  The success of Carltons has made it possible for us to regularly contribute to our community, making it a most rewarding experience.”

Efforts to find buyers for the existing business have been unsuccessful.  “It takes a team of uniquely experienced individuals to run a specialized retail store like Carltons.  We are still looking, as we have not given up hope for carrying on the legacy of Carltons.”

“We will continue to make Rehoboth Beach our home, and it’s been a wonderful experience retailing on Rehoboth Avenue.”
