From Todd Browne, CEO of Tom James:

Spencer Hays, founder of Tom James, will long be remembered for his astute business skills, but also for the impact he has made on the men’s clothing business in the U.S.

He rescued sewing facilities that were destined for shuttering. He saved Oxxford Clothes. Through the many companies of the IAG – English American Tailoring, Gitman Brothers, Individualized Shirts, Franklin Clothing, Measure UP, H Freeman, Bullock and Jones, Corbin Trousers, and Coppley, he infused his business acumen and sales savvy to insure their futures and keep people working!

Through his acquisition of Holland and Sherry he made possible the creation of additional companies under the Holland and Sherry brand: Holland and Sherry Interiors and Holland and Sherry Bespoke, as well as the creation of a fine woolens mill in Chile.

Through Tom James Retail, he furthered the cause of menswear and custom clothing as he kept busy professionals ‘perfectly attired for every occasion.’

The menswear industry and the communities that are home to these manufacturing facilities owe him a great debt.

We ask you to join us in honoring a man who did so much for our industry.

Many of you may know Spencer had 60 years of blessings with his wife Marlene, and was very grateful for his 2 daughters, Julie and Mary Alice, and so proud of his 6 grandchildren.

If you are so moved, please write a letter to Spencer’s family describing the difference and impact that Spencer made in your life, in your relationships, in your career or in your family.

Please send your letter to ThankYouSpencer@tomjames.com.  We will bind all your letters into a book and present copies to Marlene, Julie, Mary Alice, and Spencer’s 6 grandchildren.

Spencer Hays will be laid to rest in Nashville, TN on Tuesday, March 7th.
