DON’T FORGET MEN ON MOTHER’S DAY!

by Karen Alberg Grossman

Fact: shoppers who come into your store for Mother’s Day gifts are often men. So smart retailers made sure their menswear shelves were fully stocked with fresh spring menswear for Mother’s Day selling.

One store doing it right is Darien Sport Shop in Connecticut. Aside from an exemplary showing of women’s fashion, children’s wear, leisure, surf, swim and unique gift items, the store welcomed reps from key brands to showcase their newest trends in menswear.

Eric Edmonds from Johnston&Murphy sold lots of shoes and belts; suede footwear was particularly hot, including new made-in-Italy loafers and slip-ons, as well as lace-up cap toe and plain toe styles in taupe, navy and brown.

Richard Binder and David Schuster were busy selling 34 Heritage jeans in lightweight spring fabrics and their new knit tops. Especially strong: their quarter top-pocket pant geared for golf and travel, five pockets in non-denim fabrics (lightweight hemp, refined twills with stretch), and five-pocket urban denim in bleached and brushed washes.

Roman Gershengorn from Patrick Assaroff sold lots of his beautiful shirts, both knits and wovens.

Other best-sellers in menswear, according to store president Richard Anders and buyer Trevor Harvey, were in the Smart Casual category including: casual linen and wool blend sport coats from Rodd&Gun and Jack Victor, woven shirts from Peter Millar and Rails, tailored chinos from Peter Millar, shoes from Martin Dingman and items from AG and Faherty.

The talented Darien Sport sales team posed for a quick photo before hurrying back to their customers, who were already filling the aisles at 10:30 am!
