FINE AND DANDY: CAD & THE DANDY OPENS RETAIL SPACE ON NYC’S WEST 57TH STREET
British tailoring house Cad & The Dandy has arrived on New York’s Billionaire’s Row (130 West 57th Street). It’s 1500 square feet of handcrafted Savile Row designs in an elegant space right below its Bespoke Penthouse (open since 2018). Its presence is a one-stop shop for men to build an exquisitely tailored wardrobe, and for men’s clothing retailers to gather inspiration.
Going above and beyond to create an exceptional customer experience that surpasses traditional retail, this new shop features not only unique and handmade clothing, but also indulgences like a private room with fully stocked bar. With its proximity to its upstairs Bespoke Penthouse, paired with its own workshop, Cad & The Dandy provides a lightning-fast turnaround for bespoke commissions, ready-to-wear alterations and unique collaborations. Everything is made in-house, made by hand and made to last.
The history of Savile Row reaches back hundreds of years. It’s bespoke tailoring that combines the tradition and craftsmanship of Savile Row with a contemporary and elegant house cut. A natural shoulder and more pronounced waist create an elegant but comfortable garment. It’s a modern interpretation of classic English style.
Says co-owner James Sleater, “At Cad & The Dandy, we’ve become known as a house with a truly defined style, making garments by hand that are both elegant and easy to wear whether that be bespoke or ready to wear. The opportunity to expand into New York with our second premises in the city is an exciting step for the brand. I hope this becomes one of many new shops in our planned company expansion.”
“Our collection is curated to embrace the elegance of classic English style, made by hand and without compromise” says co-owner Ian Meiers. “We take pride in offering a distinct alternative to the prevailing Italian-influenced designs often found in New York. Our garments epitomize traditional English tailoring with more structure, shape and impeccable attention to detail. This collection is a testament to our commitment to preserving our tailoring heritage while offering a sophisticated and contemporary choice.”
In 2021, Cad & The Dandy introduced their Ready-to-Wear line and opened a store in London, their second on Savile Row, soon selling a meticulously designed collection of garments including formalwear, business and everyday suiting, outerwear, knitwear, shirting and elevated casualwear. Made by the same hands that craft their bespoke garments, the brand’s goal was to bring their house style to a wider audience, while developing the offering to suit changing tastes.
“Every ready-to-wear garment from Cad & The Dandy is made by hand. When launching our Ready-to-Wear collection in 2021, we knew only one thing, bespoke, and that’s how we’ve approached our latest collection. Each garment is made the old-fashioned way: hand padded lapels, hand sewn collar, working buttonholes and fully canvassed, all made by hand,” explains Creative Director Oliver Mumby.
“The ready-to-wear store is an excellent complement to our full bespoke experience. For the client who needs something on a shorter timeline, it’s a viable alternative,” adds Managing Director USA Steve Knorsch.
The tonal color range featured in Cad & The Dandy’s collections further enhances the timelessness of their clothing. By focusing on a palette of classic, understated tones, the brand creates pieces that are versatile and easy to incorporate into any wardrobe.
“We are an English tailor with worldly style. Every new brand professes to honor the lightweight, relaxed style of Italy, but we seek to continue the English heritage, with just a touch of Italian comfort. Our unique blend of tradition and ease creates garments that are not only exquisitely tailored but also exceptionally wearable,” sums up Mumby.
