Is There Room For World-Builders in Fashion Anymore?

Until recently, it felt like men’s fashion was firmly in the era of world building. This was not always the case. Traditionally in menswear, clothes have done all the talking. Designers focused on fabric and drape and shape, and the story of a collection was about utility and purpose. But over the years, some designers, notably Hedi Slimane, broke through in the mainstream by constructing clothing that was part of a more radical and uncompromising aesthetic universe. Slimane—first at Dior Homme, and currently at Celine—doesn’t design clothing so much as he designs the idea of a rock star lifestyle.
