by John Russel Jones

The New School’s Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) division has announced that John Bartlett will be its Director of Fashion for Executive and Professional Studies. The award-winning designer and proponent of sustainability will formally begin his role on July 10th, 2023.

In his new role, Bartlett will lead CPE’s fashion executive education, including curriculum development, industry outreach and strategic partnerships, and teaching and learning for Parsons Executive Education and the Luxury Management and Design Innovation (EMILUX) joint program with ESSEC Business School. He will guide and enhance CPE’s interdisciplinary approach to fashion, design-thinking, and innovation for experienced professionals, entrepreneurs, and those new to the industry.

“The class of challenges we face in business and society today are at a planetary scale. How we teach design innovation by equipping the next generation of leaders with imagination and resilience is core to our mission at The New School,” said Dr. Mariana Amatullo, Vice Provost and Academic Dean for CPE. “John brings a unique perspective and set of experiences in fashion design, education, and sustainable practices that will amplify our distinctive approach to teaching and learning and help position our programs at the leading edge of fashion education in the context of lifelong learning. I’m delighted to welcome John as our new Director of Fashion for Executive and Professional Studies and look forward to working with him and my colleagues in the School of Fashion at Parsons to expand our offerings and empower our participants with the skills and tools for career growth and the creative confidence to enact transformational change in their organizations.”

An acclaimed designer, Bartlett brings over thirty years of fashion industry experience to The New School. His namesake collection, “John Bartlett,” earned him ‘Swarovski Best Newcomer Award’ and ‘Best Menswear Designer of the Year’ from the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 1997. He also received the Designer of the Year award from the American Footwear and Apparel Association (AAFA) in 2010. An advocate of sustainable design, Bartlett received a Lexus/CFDA Eco-Challenge grant in 2012 to create a collection entirely from upcycled and recycled material for New York Fashion Week. He has worked only with recycled or organic materials for more than a decade and promotes the use of earth friendly alternatives for animal derived materials such as leather, wool, and down.

“I’m excited to join The New School’s Continuing and Professional Education as Director of Fashion for Executive and Professional Studies,” said Bartlett. “I have such respect and admiration for Parsons’ and The New School’s innovative curriculum, and I’m looking forward to partnering with faculty and staff to create unique and tailored experiences that meet the interests and needs of individuals and organizations.”

Prior to joining The New School, Bartlett served as the director of the Fashion program at Marist College where he worked to enhance and elevate the Design and Merchandising programs, focusing on digital expertise, increasing internship opportunities, and pinpointing new and emerging opportunities in the fashion sector. In addition to his eponymous collection which launched in 1997, John has worked as Design Director for other American brands such as Ghurka and Liz Claiborne, as well as the Italian brand Byblos.

Bartlett holds a BA in Sociology from Harvard University and an AA in Menswear Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology.
