MENSWEAR’S BEST DRESSED – TERRY LU OF ESSENTIAL HOMME
In some fashionable circles, the word ‘chic’ is bandied about like some frivolous onomatomania. As our online editor Stephen will tell you (should you ask) we at MR Magazine treat our words more seriously, and certainly in menswear the word ‘chic’ should be used in only seriously considered circumstances. Terry Lu though, is one such circumstance.
Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Terry moved to New York for college and stayed for fashion. Serving as the editor-in-chief of Essential Homme magazine since its U.S. launch in 2010, Terry is always, absolutely, chic.
“I got into fashion because I saw a desperate need in the US for a different type of men’s fashion magazine,” he says. “I’ve always been fascinated by the ever-evolving nature of fashion, especially menswear; I really appreciate the ingenuity of great menswear designers who aren’t afraid to reinterpret menswear staples and take them to another level, and that’s essentially the quality that equipped me as the EIC of Essential Homme. I felt passionate about being the new purveyor of this information.”
In the six years since its inception, Essential Homme has risen to become a go-to resource for men’s fashion, with celebrity cover stars including Daniel Radcliffe, Kellan Lutz and Ian Somerhalder. The fashion stories, most of which are conceived, produced and styled by Terry himself, are world-class and every time I pick up an issue I’m always in awe. His elevated sense of style is reflected throughout the magazine’s pages and in person he is always on point.
“In many ways, my personal style has evolved with the magazine, and vice versa. My sense of personal style evolves with time, and comes with life’s journey through clarity and wisdom. I don’t get dominated by ‘trends’ as much anymore, but instead edit the ideas and choose the pieces that work for me.”
