NICOPANDA MIXES 90’S GRUNGE AND HIP-HOP FOR FALL COLLECTION
Nirvana’s iconic album “Nevermind” (1991) and Lil Kim’s debut masterpiece “Hard-core” (1996) go toe-to-toe in Nicopanda‘s fall/winter 2018 runway collection. Equal parts 90’s Seattle grunge rock and East Coast hip-hop glamour, these two epic music worlds collide in a mash-up of flannel, PVC, and gold chains.
Oversized thrift-store silhouettes in bright buffalo check are paired with metallic mini skirts and plastic puffer coats. Topped off with hand-knit ski caps emblazoned with the slogans “F*ck Sh*t Up” and “Queens” – a nog to both the NYC neighborhood and the actually “Queens” who run the city!
Taking the 90’s influence one step further, Nicopanda has partnered with legendary hip-hop & electronic record label Tommy Boy on the collection. Founded in NYC in 1981, Tommy Boy is credited with launching the careers of notable hip-hop artists such as Africa Bambaataa, House of Pain, De La Soul, and Naughty By Nature.
Known for fusing electronic music with hip-hop since its early days, Tommy Boy introduced EDM to mainstream audiences with releases by Coldcut, 808 State, Sneaker Pimps and Information Society. The label also launched the career of RuPaul. The 15-piece collection blends elements of early rave style and British punk rock seamlessly. Classic nylon tracksuits in custom made Nicopanda plaids are paired with bucket hats and faux-fur lined bomber jackets – all proudly displaying the iconic Tommy Boy logo.
