TÉCHIN DEBUTS NEW STYLE AT CARNEGIE HALL WITH CELLIST JAN VOGLER AND POET AMANDA GORMAN

by John Russel Jones

Luxury menswear brand Téchin unveiled its latest style last Saturday night with an evening of classical music and contemporary American poetry at Carnegie Hall. The evening featured inaugural poet Amanda Gorman’s stirring piece, “New Day’s Lyric,” with German cellist Jan Vogler playing a selection of Johann Sebastian Bach’s celebrated Cello Suites. Gorman explained, “We’re bringing something from the past into a modern, contemporary feel. And we’re doing it with poetry that I have never performed with music before.”

For the performance, Gorman wore an elegant gown by Prada featuring hand-sewn embellishments. Vogler wore a Téchin petrol pleated dress shirt paired with the Vanguard jacket from the brand’s SS24 collection. Gorman’s immortal “So let us not return to what was normal / But reach toward what is next” reflected the evening’s thematic blend of classic and contemporary and served as the ideal foreground for the latest styles from both brands.

Designer Téchin collaborated with Vogler and performer Bill Murray for their 2017-19 New Worlds” tour, initially designing Vogler’s Carnegie Hall look by drawing inspiration from the classical portraiture of musicians and designing alongside his music. The designs were later modernized to portray a distinct New York style, showcasing unlined navy Nappa leather with suede and custom-knit wool inserts to give structure and radiance while allowing flexibility and movement to play the demanding Bach suites.

Téchin, based in New York’s West Village, features a modern, minimalist take on men’s casualwear. Clients include David Yurman, Lyor Cohen, Bill Murray, and Aldis Hodge. The first pieces from the updated collection will be available in the flagship store beginning in the Spring/Summer ’24 season.
