THE 10 MOST CREATIVE MENSWEAR MOMENTS AT THE 2024 GOLDEN GLOBES

by Michael Macko

Like aviator sunglasses, the classic black tuxedo, whether double or single-breasted, peak or shawl collar, makes every guy look extra handsome, call it the “James Bond Effect”, call it “cleaning up well”, call it whatever you want, but it’s true. So we’re not going to waste anyone’s time saying “Mega-rich movie star XYZ, with a stylist and endorsement deal with a major fashion house looked amazing in his black tuxedo last night.” Instead, let’s take a look at the guys who took risks, some big, some small; some landed, some missed, but all gave us something to text about this morning.

White Knights

Andrew Scott in Valentino, Jonathan Bailey in Givenchy

Either these handsome actors all got the white memo, or their stylists only had SS/24 sample suits to pull from. Either way, they looked great and kept true to the maxim that the Globes are the more casual pre-cursor to the Academy Awards. Leto (not shown), the only “fashion guy” in the bunch, added a pair of black leather gloves, which added a slightly subversive edge to his look of a black jacket paired with white trousers.

Neccessary Accessory

Colman Domingo in Louis Vuitton, Timothée Chalamet in Celine Homme and Barry Keoughan in Louis Vuitton

These three were the peacocks of the night, Domingo and Keoughan, not only scoring some of the coveted first red carpet looks by Pharrell Williams for Louis Vuitton, but also embodying the age-old fashion adage“before leaving the house, look in the mirror and add another accessory.” Keoughan’s pearl wallet chain deserves next year’s award for “Best Accessory in a Supporting Role.” It wouldn’t have been fair to not include Chalamet here because he is such an integral part of the fashion zeitgeist, jumping from label to label while eschewing genders.

Every Which Way But Right

John Krasinski in Dolce & Gabbana

I hate to call out John Krasinski (above with his lovely wife Emily Blunt) and suffer the ire of The Office fans. I am a big fan of his stylist Ilaria Urbinati, who rarely makes a misstep, but the problem here was with the suit: The fabric used on the trousers was a burgundy with too much blue in it, so that in some light it appeared to be purple, and instead of complementing the jacket, they clashed with it. Stylists for female celebrities are very smart about doing light tests on what their clients wear for color and sheerness, but apparently the same does not hold true for men’s. It’s hard to see in most of the images, but there is a military stripe of the red from the jacket on the side of his pants, which helps make the suit look better in profile. Plus points to red as being the new menswear formal color that I am sure we will see more of at the upcoming Emmy, Grammy, and Academy Awards.

Flower Power

Chris Perfetti and Tyler James Williams, both in Dolce & Gabbana

I chose these two because they were so similar and yet so different, and there are things that work and some that don’t for both looks. I know that Tyler James Williams worked with the Dolce & Gabbana atelier on his look and you can see that because it is tailored to perfection. I love the lapel flowers on both, but am not a fan of William’s chain: It doesn’t add anything to the look and actually distracts from the eye. Perfetti’s choice, a boxier double-breasted jacket doesn’t give him the same fit as Williams, but his color choice was far more successful. As far as the no-shirt look, I think this ongoing trend is not for everyone, especially if you are not tan. The pale skin and white jacket just washes him out. I am in no way body shaming Perfetti, but I don’t think that what should be a sexy look complements his outfit or makes him look any better.

Good Guy

Billie Eilish in Willy Chavarria

We here at MR are longtime fans of Willy Chavarria and it was so good to see him and his menswear on the red carpet, worn to perfection by Billie Eilish. We reached out to Willy to find out whether this was something directly from his menswear line or a custom creation he made for Eilish and we are waiting to hear back from him. Also, the fact that Billie was proudly touting on the red carpet, that she had “thrifted” her Mary Janes was just a chef’s kiss for this look.
