Independent retailers know the score. Disruption from e-commerce changed consumer expectations on price, convenience and everything else. Retailers adjusted, showing off their tenacity and innovation in the process, then Covid-19 arrived and took everyone for an unpleasant ride. Now that the reopening of retail has commenced, retailers face a familiar challenge: Customer expectations have evolved yet again. This time, though, independent stores face not only new expectations but a wave of uncertainty regarding the health of public spaces.
