THE SPIRIT OF MIGHTY WOMEN: FASHION GROUP INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
Fashion Group International produced a wonderful evening last week celebrating Women’s History Month and the strength of women across the globe hosted by artist Ashley Longshore, as well as industry personalities Fern Mallis, Linda Fargo, Teri Agins, and Veronica Webb. Longshore, a renowned pop artist, showcased her talent at her Soho gallery with 72 paintings of remarkable women. “The allure of continuing this collection isn’t about the beauty or fame of these women. It is how they handled adversity and remained true to themselves always. That is the spirit that I want to capture.”
Longshore is known for blending pop culture with social commentary, challenging convention and championing individuality. Among my personal favorite paintings: Nina Simone, Iris Apfel, Rosa Parks, Grace Jones, Joan Didion, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Fern Mallis, Josephine Baker, Gloria Steinem, Tony Morrison, Harriet Tubman and Nadia Murad. (But I would name all 72 if I had the space…)
This exhibition is open to the public at Longshore’s 43 Crosby Street gallery and I highly recommend that you get there. A portion of all art sales goes to cash awards to creatives; this year’s award will go to a female artist from an underrepresented community. For more info: @ashleylongshoreart.
