In the book Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011, Hives frontman Pelle Almqvist points out an interesting fact about every musical movement of the 20th century: They are all about the pants. San Francisco in ’67, New York in ’77, grunge, hip-hop, the abomination that is rap core—every one of those musical eras, he says, is associated with a specific style of pants. From the runways of this past men’s fashion month to the style on the streets, one clear-cut trend has emerged in 2017—that, in terms of length and cut of pants, there is no real trend. From the cropped-and-wide of Todd Snyder and N. Hoolywood, to the loose-and-long of Dior Homme and Louis Vuitton, to the slim-and-tailored of Haider Ackerman and Alexander McQueen—and yes, even to the skinny jeans of Saint Laurent, Balmain, and John Elliott—men’s trousers are having an “anything goes” moment.
