This week, on the eve of the fall 2023 season, there was more news. Over a year after Virgil Abloh’s passing, Louis Vuitton has invited KidSuper’s Colm Dillane to co-create the label’s next men’s collection. In the lead-up to the shows—Martine Rose kicks things off at Pitti Uomo on Thursday—I asked menswear insiders what they expect to see on and off the runways in 2023, and, just as importantly, what they’d like to see. Among the buyers, stylists, editors, and photographers I talked to, the answers were varied, but they seem to agree on two somewhat contradictory things: The immediate future of menswear lies in tailoring (there’s a “fashion is cyclical” pun in here somewhere), but what we’re all looking forward to is more personal experimentation. Whether that means subscribing to one of the many -core trends populating TikTok, or leaving them all behind in favor of a well-cut suit or a maximalist fits…well, that’s up to all of you.
