This social and highly personal form of retail, often called a trunk show or a pop-up, might seem anachronistic in an industry that has seen the proliferation of online-only, direct-to-consumer brands. Companies like Bonobos, Trunk Club, Warby Parker and Everlane, to name a few, addressed men’s aversion to shopping and offered them a way to avoid having to spend a lot of time doing it. Which makes it all the more surprisingly that these gatherings at brick-and-mortar stores—a throwback to the days when tailors traveled from town to town—are on the rise.
