Will the Tie Ever Make a Comeback?
Nov 14, 2023
As my colleague Guy Trebay, our men’s wear critic, said when I asked him about ties, “It never pays to sound the death knell in fashion since even the most seemingly defunct articles of clothing have a way of rising from the dead, and this is particularly so in men’s wear, where the repertoire is limited and largely based on centuries-old customs.” Read more at The New York Times.
I began buying neckties in 1962 and have every tie that I have ever owned . there are almost 4500 now .living in South Beach I have not worn a tie in years and I really don’t think that there is going to be a revival of neckwear except for the special occasions that were mentioned in the article. lifestyle changes are the major impact in what men wear and obviously dressware is not An impactful lifestyle change going on now
I still believe a Gentleman will always wear a tie. In addition to mannerisms, it shows self respect.
Once again was proven at todays PITTI IMMAGINE UOMO Luncheon that ties “Made in Italy” are indeed on an upswing with another jump up from last year. I also believe one wants to take better care when dressing these days.
Made in Italy is definitely a plus
I remember when casual Friday was gaining traction, I knew a very successful clothier who left the business because he was convinced that we’d never sell suits again. Maybe neckties will never be considered an essential element of proper dressing again, but I doubt it. I think it makes sense to remember the adage, “Nothing is permanent in fashion except good taste.” In my store, we will continue to show our customers how to look their best, and that includes wearing beautiful ties.
