BORSALINO UPDATES ITS HAT INSPIRED BY HUMPHREY BOGART

by Stephen Garner

Borsalino has launched its fifth series collector’s hat – the Bogart by Borsalino Cut 5 – in exclusive partnership with the Humphrey Bogart Estate, the organization that represents and preserves the renowned actor’s legacy.

The shape is one of Bogart’s absolute favorites, with a high dome and medium brim. Exclusively made in warm turmeric shaved felt, the fedora style is paired with a floral hatband that sports a poppy motif. Influenced in part by the 19th-century Decandentism movement, where excess was both celebrated and cursed, the inside the hat features one of the actor’s famous and humorous expressions – “Never trust a man who doesn’t drink” – imprinted on the internal brown leather Moroccan band.

Between the 1930s and 1950s, Bogart starred in dozens of well-known films, often playing tough hearted characters. His most famous role in Michael Curtiz’s masterpiece Casablanca as Rick Blaine wearing an unforgettable Borsalino fedora has earned its forever rightful place in Hollywood history.

Borsalino and cinema have always shared a strong bond, linking the hat makers with renowned icons from Jean-Paul Belmondo in Breathless (Jean-Luc Godard, 1960); Marcello Mastroianni in (Federico Fellini, 1963); Robert DeNiro in Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone,1984); and Tony Servillo in The Great Beauty (Paolo Sorrentino 2013.)

A dedicated Bogart by Borsalino campaign was shot against Milan’s most symbolic locations, with images that convey the actor’s playful spirit and Maison’s hat-making magic. Through contemporary ‘Boogie-influenced’ storytelling, it mixes present-day style codes with celebrated dialogue.

Additionally, the Bogart by Borsalino Cut 5 is featured with a collectible and dedicated hatbox, inspired by the actor’s 1952 Oscar win for his role in British-American film The African Queen (John Huston 1951).

  1. I doubt if Bogart would have worn his fedora with a flowery band!
    Perhaps a 1 1/4-1 1/2 ” black or brown grosgrain.
    Aside from that, nice hat!
