CANALI DEBUTS SPRING 2021 COLLECTION

by Stephen Garner

Canali has dropped the lookbook to its spring/summer 2021 collection, which is filled with garments made for our needs in this new COVID-induced normal.

The Italian luxury brand is continuing its three sub-segments this season – Canali 1934, Black Edition, and Exclusive. Each of which are designed to be mixed and matched for our new lifestyles and all include sartorial and sportswear items along with accessories.

Canali 1934 this season serves the purpose of constructing a smart wardrobe of functional outfits for urban living. The set is a cosmopolitan metropolis in which garments are versatile and interchangeable in terms of use and function. The new Shacket, a hybrid garment in which shirt and jacket converge to create the very essence of casual for the new decade, perfect for a video conference from home, a stroll downtown, or a meeting at the office, debuts this season.

This line, which is characterized by breathable, water repellent, and ultra-resistant fabric, expands in terms of its offering and research this season. Canali renews the tradition of its famous and reinterpreted raincoats and trenches, as well. In the spring/summer ‘21 collection, these garments feature in a variety of fits and finishes. Long garments with fluid lines are matched with short and bold ones. Solaro fabrics in a multitude of colors, including traditional green-orange, or the more delicate sage and natural green alternate with reversible fabrics.

Overall the Canali 1934 segment is characterized by the tenuous tonalities of wisteria and sage, juxtaposed with more vibrant hues, like brick red and Tuareg blue, standing out amid multi-color stripes of sky and details of urban architecture, held together by a base of natural color.

Black Edition serves as the brand laboratory this season, where hybrid products are created, and distinguish themselves due to ergonomic cuts that conjure up unexpected silhouettes. An abundance of allusions to the military world is seen throughout, evoking a sense of adventure and performance, reinforced by the use of technical fabrics with vibrant color contrasts.

Highlights include the soft hooded jersey Hybrid jacket with spacious pockets and mini zip pockets for Bluetooth headphones or a notepad. The reinterpretation of the suit with a modern twist continues with some models inspired by the military world.

Seersucker is mixed up this season in a 3-D mesh technical fabric that maintains its structure but changes its composition, for more modern and sporty garments. Stretch wool also adds a worn effect for wool denim, viscose, and polyester, this new blend combines resistance and lightness, perfect even for the most sweltering summers.

Outerwear items in Black Edition convey the adventurous spirit of a young and modern explorer who cannot do without an item as fundamental as the nylon trekking backpack. Inner trims made of multi-color rope are a distinctive feature of bombers and parkas. The practical and essential shapes, materials like ripstop and technical wool, matched with the use of Velcro in these items express a sense of permanent adventure.

The bright yellow knitwear and technical accessories match with military green and black as well as teal and walnut nuances that feature on jackets and suits. Bright and contrasting colors, exclusively dedicated to this segment. An effect bordering on camouflage, merging and blending into the thick urban jungle.

In the Exclusive segment, adventure embraces soft and relaxed shades and is characterized by sophisticated research into details, materials, and finishes. Suits in this line are truly dandy and exalt stylistic elements of high-end sartorial tradition: jackets feature ample lapels enriched with pick stitching and hand-embroidered eyelets, shoulders are characterized by classic volumes and ruffled armholes, synonymous with the great mastery of Canali tailors; the inner canvas is lightweight and comfortable. Numerous inner and outer sartorial details enrich these suits.

Research into detail and the delicateness of colors are also seen in the sage green linen-cotton blend gabardine field jacket with fabric-covered buttons and natural safari-inspired horn zip stoppers, a key element of Exclusive outerwear. Mastery and originality characterize fabrics too, with the use of pure silk for knitwear or in blends: cotton-silk for carcoats and cashmere-silk for sand color jackets.
