The 2017 Back to School retail season sales will be better than last year even though a couple of states dropped tax-free weekends. Georgia and Mississippi dropped out and some other states cut their time somewhat. However, the more significant selling period will be the oncoming holiday season and I think it will be quite good in 2017. Here are some facts: The calendar is very good. This year the Christmas holiday (December 25) falls on a Monday. That means Christmas eve is on Sunday and stores will have a strong selling season right through the previous Saturday night. I expect Saturday, December 16 and Saturday, December 23 will be top selling days. The consumer has been shopping later every year for gifts. This makes the last week very important.
