GOOD PRESS! PAISLEY & GRAY GETS ITS TURN ON THE RED CARPET

by Karen Alberg Grossman

Paisley & Gray’s Vince Marrone and designer Alison Mangaroo were pleasantly surprised seeing P&G’s red velvet DB peak lapel tuxedo jacket worn by native American actor Tatanka Means in yesterday’s Vanity Fair post on the SAG Awards. “When you send clothing to an agency for potential celebrity clients, you never know when or if it might be worn. Usually, nothing ever happens…” confides Marrone.

Mangaroo points out that fall ’23 was the launch season for this striking red and black tuxedo jacket that’s already received considerable press. “It’s a great piece not only for its drama but because it somehow takes on the persona of the guy who wears it…”

In this case, the persona was Killers of the Flower Moon’s Tatanka Means, who, with stylist Leona Mizrahi, chose this tux not just for its rich colors and textures but also because to the Lakota people, red represents the north and, therefore strength and endurance. The bold colors also reflect the American Indian Movement, led by Tatanka’s father, activist Russell Means, in the 1970s.

For this past weekend’s SAG awards, Paisley’s red velvet tuxedo jacket was photographed with black trousers by Jack Victor, who also dressed Tatanka in an emerald velvet, peak-lapel tuxedo for the Emmy Awards. Although he claims he’s not fashion-savvy, Tatanka is certainly representing his heritage in style and authenticity, down to his two thick braids that he plaits himself.

Editor’s note: Kudos to MR’s prescient fashion director, Michael Macko, who chose this now-famous P&G red velvet tuxedo jacket for the cover of our January ’23 issue.
