JOSEPH ABBOUD’S NEXT MOVE

by Karen Alberg Grossman

Award-winning fashion designer Joseph Abboud is joining the lineup at 77 WABC Radio, beginning Saturday, February 6th at 5 pm, as host of Threads, a one-hour radio program that examines life through the lens of fashion and design.

His weekly program will include revealing interviews with legendary designers and fashion VIPs, candid conversations with listeners, fashion/style/lifestyle advice, and intriguing stories from Joseph’s 30+ years in the fashion business. “I’m a lifelong listener to radio,” Abboud confides, “so I’m thrilled to use the power of audio to bring stories and insights about fashion and style to New Yorkers and America.”

Among Abboud’s long list of accomplishments: creating his own eponymous and highly recognizable designer brand, launching the hugely successful ($250 million) Black Brown label for Lord & Taylor / Hudson’s Bay, spearheading successful made-in-America made-to-measure programs for Tailored Brands, numerous teaching and speaking engagements, and a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from MR magazine. Yet with all this and more, Abboud seems genuinely enthused about this new journey.

“I feel fortunate to have achieved a lot in my life but the prospect of reaching consumers directly to share my passion for this business is something special,” Abboud says. “We in the industry too often get caught up in the esoteric aspects of fashion: the exaggerated theatrical, runway shows; the gender-neutral designs that can be confusing to consumers. Yes I know it’s a metaphor, an art form, but what good is it if consumers don’t get it? My goal is to demystify fashion for everyday men and women. And to teach the relevance of fashion, which doesn’t exist in a vacuum and is always connected to the cultural zeitgeist of the moment. I also hope to communicate how dressing well can truly elevate one’s outlook.”

Pressed to reveal which aspect of this project he’s most excited about, Abboud confides that he can’t wait to meet Cousin Brucie, whose show follows Threads on WABC’s Saturday evening line-up.

  1. I think one of my fondest memories of Joe was when I was at the Piti Show in Florence many years ago. The entire Italian Clothing Designers were all previewing their newest collections, and it was unanimous that all their color stories were at that time all jewel tones.
And then there was Joseph Abboud Collection proudly and confidently showing earth tones. Now that was so impressive to me, going so confidently in the complete opposite direction of the other top global designers. A great confidence lesson to share with upcoming creative designers. Go with your heart ♥️
Good luck Joe on your new venture 🙏

  2. I believe Joseph has a journey of great wisdom to share and look forward to listening in on his new venture. Worked with Joseph while on the mill side creating, and his ideas never failed to excite us! We need his voice to communicate, in his words how dressing well can truly elevate one’s outlook! Thank you Joe!!

    1. Perfect person to do this. Hope he covers sustainable fashion and progress in the industry.

  3. I still remember visiting the Freedberg of Boston showroom as the start of my career and Carl Freedberg telling me to take a look
at the small room in the back of the office- which was Joseph’s showroom. As they say the rest was history. Glad to see he is
taking on a new challenge. Best of Luck Joe.

  4. I AM THRILLED THAT JOE IS GOING TO ADVISE AND ENTERTAIN US AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!! LOVE LOVE !!!!!!!!!

    1. I met Joseph a couple of times at the MAGIC show when he was looking at our IBIZA line. He is the real deal, and such a nice man. Joseph will be great on his new show.

  5. The first time I met Joe was when I was new to going to NY for market. I was bundled up from the cold and entered his showroom amazed at how he rigged his forms. The next thing I knew he was walking over to me, introduced himself, took my coat off of me and went to get me a cup of coffee. I was in awe and still am.
