Lord & Taylor is closing five additional stores for good as it continues to search for a buyer to restructure under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and keep its business alive.

The department store chain has now confirmed it will close 24 of its 38 locations. These additional stores in Schaumburg, IL; Salem, NH; Rockaway, NJ; Livingston, NJ; and Huntington Station, NY, along with the 19 previously announced stores already conducting store closing sales led by a joint venture of Hilco Merchant Resources and Gordon Brothers.

The moves come as Lord & Taylor and parent company Le Tote Inc. seek a buyer after both companies filed for bankruptcy earlier this month.

Founded in 1826 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Lord & Taylor was one of the nation’s first big department stores, run by two English-born cousins, Samuel Lord, and George Washington Taylor. The store occupied several locations before 1914 when it moved into the building that fills a whole Manhattan block on Fifth Avenue at 38th Street. That location was sold to WeWork in 2018 for $850 million and subsequently closed by January 2019.

  1. This is very very very sad news . They just brought us back to work where everyone was so happy to see that our associates are all well as long as their families. You become a beautiful family of many cultures where we all help & support each other.
Then bam, you are told, after welcoming others back, we are added to the list of closing stores.
I understand , as I too am a business person, but it takes so much out of you. The customers were so happy to see us open again . Now everything is final sale!
I remember the day in college when I applied for my L& T card . How exciting to get that card. Now… it’s an antique!
Hope someone can restore this historical name .
