How Manhattan Got Vertical Retail Right, Again

The last decade has seen  a number of surprising successes that have sent retail skyward, from the Shops at Columbus Circle, the renovation of the former World Financial Center’s retail space into the Shops at Brookfield Place, the Westfield World Trade Center,  and the upcoming Hudson Yards complex, all of which are part of a new generation of shopping center design, locating retail floors both above and below street level with a frequency not seen in decades.
