OPINION: ULAH AND LUNA BOUTIQUE OWNERS GET PERSONAL ABOUT ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

by John Russel Jones

Ulah & Luna co-owners Buck Wimberly and Joey Mendez, along with the owners of Dear Society, and Fetch, are reaching out to their friends, loyal customers, and the wider Kansas City community for continued support during a challenging time for retail. “Authenticity and genuine connection to our community is part of our DNA, which is why we are sharing this part of our story. That means being honest even when times are challenging. The past year has been tougher than anticipated for all of us,” says Wimberly. “As small businesses, we’ve weathered storms before, but the recent downturn has hit all of us harder than expected.” Other local retailers echo these sentiments.

“Our businesses are more than just places to shop—they’re reflections of our passion for our community. We’re committed to providing unique experiences, supporting local artisans, and providing jobs for local community members,” says Chanel Jezek, owner of Dear Society.

“As small, independent businesses, the effects of these economic changes are especially impactful”, says Wimberly. “We hope that by sharing the reality of the current retail landscape, our community can rally and support the local boutiques they’ve come to know and love.”

Despite the challenges, the three businesses remain steadfast in their commitment to serving the Kansas City community. “We love what we do, and we’re determined to continue providing exceptional products and experiences to our customers,” adds Mendez.

The merchants have five suggestions for consumers to support their stores as well as other independent retailers.

  1. Shop local: Whether consumers need clothing, gifts, accessories, or home goods, consider supporting local businesses. If an in-person visit is impossible, explore their websites to make purchases.
  2. Purchase gift cards: Gift cards are a great way to support these businesses now and enjoy their products later. Through April 30th, shoppers can get 20% off a gift card purchase at Ulah & Luna, Dear Society, or Fetch.
  3. Spread the word: Share the stories of these businesses with friends, family, and social media followers. Recommendations can make a big difference.
  4. Attend community events: Look for local events hosted by these businesses, such as in-store concerts, charity collaborations, and other community gatherings.
  5. Provide Feedback: Input is invaluable to local retailers. Consumers should let them know what they love and how they can improve and better serve the community.

As passionate advocates for Kansas City and its vibrant community, Ulah & Luna, Dear Society, and Fetch are continually inspired by the support and resilience shown by their fellow Kansas Citians during challenging times. Wimberly and Mendez, along with Dear Society and Fetch, express their gratitude to everyone who has supported their businesses over the years and remain optimistic about the future.

“We love what we do, and we’re committed to continuing to serve the Kansas City community,” says Mendez. “With your help, we can overcome these challenges and emerge stronger together.”
