TAKING STOCK

by Karen Alberg Grossman

Robert Stock, the award-wining designer who learned his craft working with Ralph Lauren, then added wit and wonder to menswear with his inimitable Robert Graham collection, has spent much time of late pondering how to jumpstart a market lacking excitement. After all, ‘quiet luxury’ can take one just so far…

The concept he came up with is hard to describe; one should see it, touch it, and try it on to truly appreciate its cool factor. It’s a collection of opposites, seamlessly combining hoodies with knit sport coats, formal with leisure, street style with elegance, traditional roots with contemporary flair. It’s creative but not outlandish, with tremendous attention to detail in stitching, linings, buttons, and trims. It’s luxury knits and wovens, crafted in Robert’s state-of-the-art factory in India. It’s classic cars and rock stars, the softest French fleece imaginable, traditional menswear patterns done up in cool, comfy hooded jackets. Some styles are military-inspired, others exude team spirit. It’s a fun, flattering collection to dress up or down, to wear every day in different ways.

Suggested retails: $295-$595. Target accounts: better men’s stores on the hip side, cool jeans stores, and traditional retailers open to innovate.
The new Stock collection is part of Podium Brands Group, showing from Jan 19-23 at 1333 Broadway, 12th floor. Or see it at the Chicago Collective, Feb 3-6 at the Merchandise Mart. For info and appointments: 732-861-9844.
