THEORY LOOKS TO ‘NEW HORIZONS’ FOR SPRING

by Stephen Garner

As the sign of the times, Theory has released two lookbooks showcasing its fall ’20 and spring ’21 collections.

Called “The Theory of Now,” the contemporary brand explores a changed and changing world through a visual narrative in two chapters: Reinvention (fall ‘20) and Renewal (spring ‘21).

The coming months are a time to reflect and reinvent, to move forward with energy and optimism amid a world in dramatic flux. In this unprecedented moment of transition, what is fashion’s response to a new cultural order, to new rhythms of life and work?

Theory’s prominence as a purveyor of workwear demands elaboration with the currents of change. Now, the brand proposes a revised system for getting dressed: workwear becomes lifewear as the physical boundaries between the home and office dissolve, as the boundaries between work and life, public and private, are redrawn.

For fall, the first chapter of the brand’s new project, follows a period of unprecedented transitions, where life was spent predominantly in interior spaces and freedoms were challenged, where urgent questions of health, social justice, climate, and travel surfaced and shaped our collective experience. The moment calls for innovation, strength, and conviction in the face of uncertainty; one’s wardrobe becomes an extension of that new resolve. Bold silhouettes and luxurious layers in outerwear and knitwear make for a sharp urban uniform designed for an energetic reemergence.

For spring ‘21, new horizons and new hope are explored.  Months of great resilience and self-discovery lead to a renewed optimism. Enduring style, a focus on the luxury of comfort, and a commitment to environmental responsibility give Theory meaning in a universe where choices are driven by purpose. The silhouette is soft and free, built from versatile separates in lightweight knit, cotton poplin, tropical wool, and stretch linen. Even the signature Theory suit is reimagined with a relaxed attitude in technical knitwear, adapting classic tailoring to the prevailing cultural mood. Here are effortless solutions to the reorganized needs and desires of an era forever changed by the present and committed to the promise of progress.
