AMIRI SHOWS SPRING COLLECTION IN LOS ANGELES

by Stephen Garner

Presenting its collection in Los Angeles for the first time, Amiri’s spring/summer 2021 line represents a proud homecoming and tribute to West Coast culture. As the community begins to reconnect, this season encourages a message of comfort inspired by an attitude of wellness and ease that is quintessentially Californian.

Overlooking the city, the show is captured at John Lautner’s iconic Sheats-Goldstein Residence in Beverly Hills – a stone’s throw from the brand’s new Rodeo Drive flagship store. An original mix created and performed by legendary L.A. producer, The Alchemist, floats through the runway.

This season, CEO and creative director Mike Amiri paints a native’s portrait of the L.A. spirit. Expressive stories riff across an eased silhouette, embracing an attitude of comfort and leisure alongside the house’s rock ‘n’ roll voice. At the heart of the collection, Amiri’s signature relaxed tailoring is coupled with ‘70s-inspired sportswear as athletic constructions become the equivalent of a tailored suit.

Woolen overcoats wrap around drawstring nylon and lightweight leather sports shorts as louche t-shirts crafted in silk trim offer the formal touch of fine evening wear. Proving that the Amiri man finds equal comfort in leisure as on the stage, structured blazers contrast with denim and authentic athletic detailing, while collegiate varsity jackets layer over jumpsuits cut at the knees and rendered in rich, soft leather. Drawing codes out of their comfort zones, workwear is treated like tailoring: jumpsuits emerge in deep indigo and white tobacco leather as a nod to L.A.’s thriving DIY art scene, while dungaree styles accent a relaxed demeanor, crafted in Amiri’s hallmark denim.

Parkas are introduced this season as casual outerwear in tan leather and a hooded nylon iteration with functional, elasticated detailing, while the versatility of moving from daytime excursions to evening is emphasized with the simple addition of a dusk brown leather perfecto.

Drawn as this season’s bomber motif, wanderlust island imagery serves as coastal escapism, and cannabis prints interpret California’s wellness lifestyle and retreats.

The Amiri Classic sunglasses are totems of the season. Bucket hats are essential, rendered in crochet, cotton, and Italian leather, while basketballs become over-the-shoulder bags. Crocheted gym bags emphasize the collection story alongside cross-body iterations and luxury carry-ons. On foot, Amiri’s Skeleton and Bone Runner sneakers are worn throughout, rendered in this season’s new colorways.
