Four years ago, when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that “breaking” — or breakdancing, as it’s more commonly known — would make its debut at the 2024 Paris Games, the news raised some eyebrows. After all, ever since its establishment, the IOC has been an organization steeped in bureaucracy and tradition. Breaking, on the other hand, is a sport that could never be accused of stagnancy. It’s an unlikely marriage, then — like a hip-hop producer conducting a symphony orchestra.
